Research & Development project 3D capacity
Architect: UNStudio
Location: Huizen, the Netherlands
Completed: July 2008
The project was awarded an honourable mention at the Quest3D Awards 2008 competition and nominated among the top 5 architectural realtime 3D productions world wide at the CGArchitect 3D Awards 2009.
3D capacity was invited to give two lectures about the Moebius House application, its features and its techniques at the Quest3D 2008 Conference held in Aachen, Germany.
3D capacity is continuously innovating their core product, the Virtual Scale Model. Rather than developing seperate features and techniques, we chose to incorporate these in a demo application. The Moebius House demo is the result of an applied Research & Development project.
The complex architecture of the Moebius House, designed by UNStudio, is considered a modern classic. However, the private dwelling is not accessible to the public. Without the actual drawings, the design was 3D modeled from photos found in books and on the internet. The Virtual Scale Model application reveals the hidden architecture and offers an opportunity to actually explore the building.
The demo combines a detailed interior and realistic natural exterior scene in a single model. The exterior features a large amount of detailed trees waving gently in the wind and casting dynamic shadows. A new water rendering system was developed and the scene bathes in the 'godrays' of a warm evening sun. The interior contains many details and has a special focus on realistic materials that guarantee immersion. Surround sound effects are used to enhance the atmosphere of the natural environment. A custom user interface gives maximum control over the application.
The majority of these features have been incorporated into our regular projects.
