Multi Vastgoed wins Virtual Scale Model Contest

The prestigious design of the Koopgoot II by OMA, submitted by Multi Vastgoed, has been chosen as the winner of the Virtual Scale Model Contest. During the festive prize event, the project was unanimously voted the most suitable project by the jury for a virtual elaboration by 3D capacity.

Multi Vastgoed will receive a Virtual Scale Model created with the latest techniques. 3D capacity will also use the Virtual Scale Model of this winning entry to compete for international 3D Awards. In previous years, the agency garnered international success with Virtual Scale Models of the spa complex Therme Vals by Peter Zumthor and the Moebius House by UNStudio.

The jury reached the following verdict for the winner:

The transformation of the Koopgoot II into a Virtual Scale Model is an exciting challenge with great possibilities for graphic and narrative-technical innovation. Because of its location on a very famous place in Rotterdam there is a high requirement for the recognition of the model. A high degree of realism has to be achieved while at the same time the model must be rendered smoothly. The connection of the project to the current situation prompts the question of whether and how this transition should be visualized. The total size of the project is very large. This means that the model should show both the project and the urban context on a scale from small to large. A convincing relationship of the interior to the outside is also very important. Especially the upper floors should offer a good overview over the city.

The jury reached the following verdict for all nominees:

Dance palace, St. Petersburg, UN Studio
With the dance palance, UN Studio has positioned a jewel in otherwise anonymous surroundings. The dance palace has a highly sculptural shape that offers different looks from different orientations. The facade treatment unifies the design, offering an extraordinary visualisation during both day and night. The festive character of the building may well be emphasized. The model is a technical challenge for a real-time visualisation.

The building can be dissected easily into the various functional and spatial layers. It is an exciting example of the current task of the compact inner-city building. The spaciousness and the effect of daylight in the building are very interesting. The Koopgoot is located at an appealing spot in the heart of Rotterdam. Both from the city to the building and vice versa, there are many visual relationships. The relationship to the human scale of the very large mass of the building to the ground level is very important. The challenge for the interactive visualization lies particularly in providing insight into the complexity.

Stadhuis, Almelo, Meyer en van Schooten
The atrium creates a public square in the seclusion of the building. Despite the size of the project, the architects succeeded in creating a meeting place rather than a building. The building is an appropriate response to the demand for transparency and communication between management and city, carefully avoiding coquetry and monumentality. The aesthetics serves the function. Creating the right atmosphere is a key element of the interactive visualization.

Hoge Rug Strijp-S, Eindhoven, Trudo & DNC
A very characteristic industrial Philips complex is being revived. Here, the old idiom is respected while living, working and commerce are introduced. The interaction between the monumental character and the new additions provide an interesting spatial solution in which the voids will be a shining centerpiece. The time dynamics and display of the functions are a special consideration for the interactive visualization.

IJdock, Amsterdam, ASR
A multitude of functions is dominantly designed on the waterfront in a compact way. These are sturdy inner-city buildings. The volumes respect the sightlines of the environment. For the interactive visualization, the open area on the waterfront is particularly challenging.

Nominees 'Virtual Scale Model Contest' defined

The five nominees for the'Virtual Scale Model Contest' are defined! All 54 entries have been judged by the jury according to the criteria architectural quality, routing, interaction and relations to the surroundings. After a thorough discussion, the five designs most suitable for a spectacular visualisation were chosen.

On Tuesday May 25, the winner will be announced during a festive award ceremony. The winner will receive a Virtual Scale Model created with the latest features. With the Virtual Scale Model of the winning project, 3D capacity will make an entry in international 3D competitions, like the successful entries of the spa complex Therme Vals by Peter Zumthor and the Moebius House by UNStudio in the past years.

3D capacity wins Quest3D Awards 2009

On October 23rd the Dutch visualization agency 3D capacity won first prize at the Quest3D Awards 2009. This annual competition is held internationally and offers a distinction to the best project implemented with Quest3D. The winning entry is a Virtual Scale Model of the notorious architectonic spa complex 'Therme Vals' in Graubünden, Switzerland.

Virtual Scale Model
The Virtual Scale Model allows for full freedom of navigation through the environment of a virtual structure, much like in advanced computer games. This in contrast to the traditional artist's impression, animation film or 360 degree panorama shot.

Therme Vals
The subject of entry is the spa complex in Vals, Zwitserland, designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The building is typified by several freestanding , solid-looking basin blocks with illustrious names such as Ice Stone, Fire Stone and Grotto. This creates a meandering open space with spectacular lighting.

Distinctive
Cornerstones in this winning 3D application are a new user-friendly interface and a new daylight system. By being able to rotate the sun a unique compilation of lights and shades is created. Unique to this system is that the indirect lighting changes as well, covering the grey-blue stones in the colorful tones of the sky and the surroundings.

3D capacity: Virtual Scale Models on 3D screen

On October 6 and 7, property developer Zuiderzee Vastgoed has a scoop. During the event "Woonfestival" in Lelystad, the Netherlands, a Virtual Scale Model of the construction project 'Park Houtribhoogte' will be shown on a 3D screen for the first time. With this screen, depth can be experienced without special glasses. Potential customers are now able to virtually experience the 195 dwellings and their surroundings with a realism never shown before.

A Virtual Scale Model is more than the well-known animation because it allows free navigation. Municipalities, corporations and property developers use this instrument for communication to all stakeholders to make plans comprehensible; support marketing and create support in decision procedures. The 3D screen, creating a wonderful effect with the added extra depth, is a definite added value for the Virtual Scale Model.

At this time, the WOWvx technology that was introduced by Philips earlier this year on the professional market has not been used for interactive architectural presentations before. The technique is based on a lens system that provides separate images for the left and the right eye simultaneously, resulting in a spectacular 3D experience. For this occasion, 3D capacity has enhanced the Virtual Scale Model for this special screen. The consumer's need for information is now served in a optimal way.
